The 1940 Ford De Luxe represents the final evolution of the prewar Ford before production halted for the war effort in 1942, and in many respects it represents the high-water mark of that era's American design, Bob Gregorie's waterfall grille, fender-mounted running lights, and flowing coupe roofline produced a body that the hot rod and street rod community adopted as a blank canvas almost immediately after the war ended. The De Luxe coupe has remained one of the most widely built street rod subjects for eight decades, and the quality of a given build is the primary variable that separates examples in the market. Western Kansas is among the driest regions in the country, and cars that spent their early decades there routinely survive with sheetmetal that would not have lasted in wetter climates. The seller reports all metal on this example as original to the car, a meaningful claim on an 85-year-old body that underpins the quality of the build on top of it. Clean, well-executed street rod interpretations of the 1940 Ford coupe have traded broadly depending on drivetrain, interior quality, and build provenance, with the strongest examples clearing significant sums at collector auctions. EXTERIOR

The exterior is finished in a vibrant red, set off by Halibrand wheels with Ford script hubcaps and Hankook tires sized P205/60R15 in front and P235/70R at the rear. Chrome bumpers, a split windshield, and period-correct trim maintain the car's 1940s character, while details such as modern running gear, painted headlight bezels, and contemporary accessories are integrated discreetly. The custom mirror on the driver's side shows some staining on the lens.

INTERIOR

The interior has been completely reupholstered in tan leather, including seat upholstery, door panels, carpets, headliner, and the trunk, all completed by Rick Fisher Upholstery of Augusta, Kansas. The factory instruments have been converted to 12V specification and refurbished by Williams Instruments Inc. of Arkansas. Interior climate is managed by a Gen Air 2 Vintage Air system, with controls mounted discreetly in the glove box and air ducts integrated through the louvered ash trays. An IDIDIT steering column completes the driver interface.

MECHANICAL

Power is supplied by a new Ford 5.0L fuel-injected crate engine, wired with an RJM Technology 5.0 EFI Harness. The engine exhales through Sanderson street rod headers and is kept cool by a LoBoy radiator paired with an electric fan. Shifting is handled by an AOD automatic transmission, installed by Chance Transmissions of Wichita, Kansas, and paired with a new Ford 9-inch rear end with 3.55 gears. The chassis is upgraded with a TCI frame and Mustang II front suspension with power steering for improved ride and handling. The Rock Valley 15-gallon gas tank is fitted beneath. The battery has been relocated to the trunk.
